How did Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim get a 20 year sentence when at first it was stated he was sentenced to 10 years in jail. At 3.30 pm on Monday, the Special CBI court judge pronounced the first verdict awarding him a 10 year sentence.

It was however only by 6 pm did the judge clarify that the sentences would not run concurrently but consecutively. It was clarified that he would spend 20 years in jail for the rape of two women. It was the case of the prosecution that he had raped two women. The CBI was in fact ready with a second set of arguments had the judge held that he would serve the sentence concurrently. The CBI would have sought for the sentences to run consecutively. The CBI court also ordered a fine of Rs 30 lakh to be paid to the victims who were part of his sect. The judge who pronounced the verdict on the sentence at the Rohtak jail awarded Ram Rahim two terms in the rape cases. The court had convicted him on Friday at Panchkula, but decided to award the quantum of sentence at the jail where Ram Rahim is lodged owing to security reasons.
