Dear
friends,

Right now, the world’s iconic orangutan
population is hanging on by a thread
as bulldozers and chainsaws
clear huge tracts of forest, destroying their habitat. As the
orangutan population inches closer to extinction, scientists warn we
don’t have much time, but now there’s an exciting plan to save
them.

To survive, orangutans need continuous forest land
to roam for food, but intensive cultivation and logging have
decimated their homes, leaving only isolated patches of rainforest
intact. One crucial corridor connecting two essential habitats in the
wetlands of Borneo is on the brink of destruction, but conservation
NGOs and local groups have announced a brilliant plan to buy the land
and protect it for good.
Saving this land could be the difference
between life and death for countless orangutans, but to do it, we
need enough money to beat out profit-hungry companies looking to move
in and destroy it.

This is exactly the kind of moment the
Avaaz community was made for -- if enough of us give just a little
bit, our unique, people-powered funding model will allow us to
finance a crucial sanctuary for these precious apes
and create a
fund to defend other at-risk animals when their land is under threat.
