Master: “I want to tell you something about the origins of names. Personal names reach far back into history. Some are Biblical, like Samuel or David and others have nordic-germanic roots, like Wilhelm or Siegfried. You could write a book about every name; etymology, historical or cultural. Personal names have something special. There may be links with your family. In recent years ad-hoc names appear. Sometimes an ajusted classical name, like Elswietske, or totally out of the moment, like Summer or Dawn. Still there is a story to tell.

In World War One soldiers had to go “over the top” and march through no-mans land, towards enemy lines. Both opposing parties employed heavy machine-guns and artillery, that annihilated complete regiments.

Frontline soldiers needed more protection, the losses were enormous on both sides, and British engineers developed an big, armoured vehicle, armed with small canons and machine-guns. Bullits could not penetrate the monster and though slow, it could not be stopped. In 1917 they were introduced on the battlefield and functioned reasonbly well. The driver and gunners inside the machine felt protected and the footsoldiers could hide behind it.

For security reasons the project had chosen to use a code-name for the armoured vehicle. They chose “Watertank”, a name which proved to be too long, so it was named “Tank”. Under this name, the landweapon of the future, got his name: tank.”
