Muslim armies reached Marocco in the 7^th century. In crossing to Iberia, they called the place they landed “Gubal Tariq”, now known as Gibraltar, named after the leader of the invaders Tariq (lit. mountain of Tariq). His forces were only 7000 strong, but his occupation was the birth of a muslim-dominated, multi-religious society, in which Jews and Christians participated and even flourished. Different views stimulated eachother and the “Morish” periode was a 700 year period of learning, art and architecture.

Toledo had a famous university, well known for the translation of Greek filosophers, like Aristotle and ambitious students travelled from all over Europe to Muslim-Spain.

These manuscripts, scrolls and codexes came from the library of Constantinopel. The capital of the shrunken Byzantine Empire was under severe threat by the Turks, who were Muslims. After reconquering Jerusalem and the Holy Land, they marched North and finally laid siege on the famous and beautiful city of emperor Constatine. In the past the enormous walls were enough, but this time it did not suffice.

Enormous guns, new in siege-warfare, battered the walls, who after months came tumbling down. Ironically, the guns were made by christians from Genoa. The Byzantine Emperor had no interest in this weapon and send them away.

In 1453 Constantinople fell. But before that man books, sacred documents and relics, even famous christian were brought into safety and reached Europe and Morish Toledo.

It also was the start of Renaissance; a paradigm-shift in literature, art and science. The reigning Catholic would be shaken and disturbed. The dawn of a new religious landscape.

What Islam gained in the East, it lost in Spain. In 1492 Granada fell and roman-catholicism became the dominant religion. It resulted in the deportation of all Muslims and Jews from Iberia. All their belongings were confiscated, only those who converted were allowed to stay. Most left. The Muslims were deported to northern Africa, many of the Jews went to the new Republic of the Netherlands. Spain and Portugal were religiously cleansed.
